  1. Purpose of Verbal Self-Defense
    • Start by learning the difference between Verbal Self-Defense and persuasion techniques.
    • Begin recognizing when and where it’s useful and appropriate to use Verbal Self-Defense techniques.
  2. Starting with the Right Point of View
    • Identify how we naturally accept the influence of other people’s behaviors, and learn how to properly separate and utilize them. Begin by defining the difference between “self” and “others” and learn the value of each. Then start taking your awareness out to an “observer” space where you can gain deeper insights on what works and what doesn’t.
  3. Controlling Yourself
    • What is your personal state of mind? Begin by developing a deeper understanding of how your state effects your communication skills. Then learn how an emotional state is created and effectively changed.
    • From there we can learn the process for creating a powerful, focused state which we can use in dealing with conflict, and the identify ways to practice it so it becomes a habitual response to aggressive behavior from others.
    • Finally, learn how to recognize your non-verbal cues and identify their meaning. This will allow you to have more control over how you handle the situation and effect your opponent.
  4. Using Your Senses
    • Sometimes what happens and what an observer thinks happens can be very different. Learn how to focus your attention on what is most useful in dealing with a situation and the most effective ways of utilizing that information to avoid escalating the conflict.
  5. Verbally Defending Yourself
    • What are the three parts of planning the outcome? Be in control of how this conflict will play out by using your awareness, setting your intention and maintaining your focus in the face of aggression.
    • With your outcome set, now you can use everything you’ve learned to control yourself and ultimately take control of the interaction between you and your opponent. Follow the six easy steps to getting the resolution you want.
    • In the case of any possible repercussion, the process of using the model will give you specific details of how you maintained a professional and respectable level of communication. This way you will then be able to maintain complete personal responsibility in times of verbal conflict without fear of asserting your boundaries.
  6. Tricks to Maintaining the Upper Hand
    • How do you handle the unexpected? Learn a few simply behaviors and concepts which you can utilize anywhere at anytime. Incorporate them into the Verbal Self-Defense model or use them on their own.
    • Learn what to do when you have several attackers at once and understand the rules to most effectively handle more than one aggressor.
