Dr. Scott’s Abbreviated Biography:
Dr. Daniel Scott, Msc.D. is a Neuro Linguistic Programming trainer and behavior modification coach who developed a keen interest in behavioral psychology at an early age. Having dedicated his life to helping others understand and change negative thought patterns Daniel parlayed his passion into a career by attaining the level of Certified Trainer and Consultant in the behavioral science of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) from the University of NLP at the University of California in Santa Cruz. Having recently published his first book, Verbal Self Defense in The Workplace, Daniel’s website, VerbalDefenseTactics.com offers verbal self defense training seminars for individuals and organizations worldwide.
Dr. Scott’s Full Biography:
Dr. Daniel Scott, a professional Neuro Linguistic Programming trainer and consultant living and working in the Greater Victoria area of beautiful British Columbia, Canada.
As a child, having been born with respiratory problems, Daniel was physically unable to effectively protect himself from bigger kids on the playground, which made him an easy target for school bullying. Subsequently he suffered an emotionally abusive childhood which caused him to develop a keen interest in behavioral psychology as a means to better understand the reasons behind different forms of positive and negative interpersonal communication. Daniel has since dedicated his life to helping targets of mental and emotional abuse build life skills to regain their power of choice and transform negative thought patterns into more useful and healthy habits for life.
In the process of realizing his passion and building it into a career, Daniel studied and eventually received his Trainer and Consultant Certification in the behavioral science of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) from the University of NLP at the University of California in Santa Cruz under the instruction of internationally recognized and respected NLP trainers and developers Robert Dilts, Judith DeLozier, Suzi Smith and Sid Jacobson. Daniel’s background also includes a research doctorate in Metaphysical Science from the University of Metaphysics at the University of Sedona Arizona as well as a basic level certification in Reality Therapy/Choice Theory from the William Glasser Institute, all combined together with personal training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
Over the last decade Daniel has worked to compile as many techniques as possible for building all the mental and emotional skills necessary to face any type of bullying in a multitude of different contexts. Having studied and compared several different martial art disciplines, including Aikido, Kendo, Renbukai Karate and Kung Fu, he worked to identify the most effective strategies for quick and effective self defense. Working with input from colleagues around the world he combined tactics from the gentle art of Aikido and information from the behavioral science of NLP with the Language Patterns of Ericksonian Hypnosis to develop a simple 6-step model for verbal self defense.
Today, having recently published his first book, Verbal Self Defense in The Workplace, Daniel now offers specialized verbal self defense training and seminars through the website VerbalDefenseTactics.com to individuals and organizations around the world.
Suggested topics Dr. Scott is available to speak about:
Dealing with Workplace Bullying
No business or organization wants to admit there could be a problem with workplace bullying, yet it exists. Unfortunately, most places deal with it on a reactive, rather than proactive level. Where the challenge comes in with a reactive response is if there are legal complications and the company has to show what is called “due diligence” – show that the organization took all reasonable steps possible to mitigate the issue before it escalated. Proactive companies now know they need to include effective communication and Verbal Self Defense strategies in their Heath and Wellness programs.
Popular interview questions about dealing with workplace bullying include:
- “Workplace bullying” has become a catch-phrase for a lot of things, making it tough to define… since everyone is so different what does that mean for the average employee?
- Workplace bullying has been happening for years, but it’s only recently that this has become such a big issue — why do you think this is?
- You believe that “defending yourself against a bully” is actually about, “understanding your own mind” — how does that work?
- All the communication experts liken verbal self defense to a form of persuasion, but you say the complete opposite — can you explain this a bit more?
- You have a book on this, is it going to teach me exactly what to say so that I can go into work the next day and really put a bully in his place?
- What’s one of the most important things to keep in mind when you’re dealing with an office bully?
Why Women Let Themselves Be Victims
- “Be a good girl.”
- “Don’t rock the boat.”
- “No one likes a troublemaker.”
Traditionally women have been seen as the peacemakers, the martyrs who always thought of “the greater good” often sacrificing themselves so that others may succeed. Unfortunately this mentality doesn’t usually serve women well when dealing with office politics or overbearing supervisors. Challenge is, women are not usually taught the tools to effectively stand their ground without looking like the proverbial bitch. The key to overcoming victim-hood is to learn the skill of asserting your needs all while looking like a strong, confident woman; a leader.
Popular interview questions about why women let themselves be victims include:
- Why do women let themselves be victims?
- How can someone deal with people who tell her to “Stop being so emotional” or “You’re just over-reacting” … what should she say to that?
- Why is verbal self defense so geared towards women … isn’t this a problem for men as well?
- Most communication experts liken verbal self defense to a form of persuasion, but you say this is the wrong way to think of it — what’s the difference?
- You have a verbal self defense book, how does it teach women so that they can easily how avoid that victim role?
- What’s one of the most important things a woman should keep in mind to avoid falling into that victim role?
Schools’ Rules Prevent Teachers from Stopping Student Bullying
Teachers used to have free reign in their own classrooms to discipline as they saw fit, which sometimes included corporal punishment. When we, as a society, decided that those draconian tactics were no longer allowed, what tools did we give them to replace the rod? In this age of perceived entitlement, parental perceptions (“my angel Johnny would NEVER act that way!”) coupled with the many zero-tolerance rules an educator must follow, how is a professional supposed stop bullying not only of fellow students, but also themselves – by the children they are in charge of, the parents and fellow faculty members?
Popular interview questions about the restraints teachers face when dealing with school bullying include:
- Why is it that teachers aren’t able to effectively deal with bullies in the classroom?
- The bullying issue seems to be consistently making the headline news more and more recently — why is that?
- Does your new book offer any sound advice that teachers can use to overcome playground bullying?
- What can a teacher to do more effectively handle the problem of school bullying?
- Bullying didn’t seem to be as big of a problem in the past — what did teachers do differently back then that they don’t do today?
- What are a couple key elements that teachers need to keep in mind when handling bullies?
Breeding Grounds for Workplace Bullies
Employers are faced with not only trying to keep good employees but also keeping those employees feeing safe. The challenge these days with the current economic climate is employees who are worried about job security, leaving everyone on edge, sometimes creating a “survival of the fittest” mentality. Such an office climate can easily tip the scales in the direction of (even unintentional) bullying to vie for top spots or being seen as favored by the establishment. Owners, managers and employees alike need to be proactive in creating a non-hostile environment where they can not only survive, but thrive, even if things get tense.
Popular interview questions about how organizations become breeding grounds for workplace bullies include:
- Business owners never start out with the intention of creating an abusive working environment — so how do organizations end up becoming a breeding ground for bullies?
- What does a breeding ground for workplace bullies look like — specifically, how would someone know if they were in that kind of problem space?
- Workplace bullying seems to be more of a large corporation kind of problem — should small business owners/employees be concerned about this as well?
- It seems like workplace bullying is a hot topic right now, but is it just being blown out of proportion — but how big of an issue is it really?
- How much of a role does the current economic situation play in creating such an over-abundance of workplace bullies?
- What’s one step an employer could take today to ensure they have a bully-free work environment?

“The tenants [Dr. Scott] promotes in his book are so fundamentally in line with my own that I feel like he’s been inside my head. I felt the same way the first time I read Stephen Covey, which means he’s in very good company […] This is an important piece of work. Reading through it identifies the fact that so few people are even aware of how their behaviour affects others, and that workplaces are not doing enough to coach their staff on the importance of honouring each other’s lives and perspectives.”

“I really appreciate your book – I am getting a little frustrated with the victim-mentality out there and the idea that targets don’t play an active role in their own circumstances. So, thank you for offering up some real and tangible advice about communication – which provides empowerment, as opposed to counseling – which facilitates the victim-mentality.”

“My sessions with Daniel not only taught me how to tackle my tough problems but gave me a sense of personal empowerment that was really unparalleled!”

“I was absolutely amazed at the sensitivity and gentleness shown as Daniel is able to lead my son slowly toward identifying the things which torment him, then offer practical and “do-able” ways to deal with them. … Daniel is completely understanding and empathic to the desolate feelings which can consume a person. He had the ability to gently point out that these feelings are acceptable fro the moment, but will pass. … Daniel’s “laid-back” manner and quiet acceptance, while at the same time delicately leading him towards healthier outlook has begun to work a miracle in my son’s life.”
