Persuasion versus Verbal Self Defense
A lot of books on the topic of verbal self defense talk about the idea of persuasion, however, the purpose of persuasion is much different from self defense. Verbal self defense is focused on dealing with words and behaviors that cause a person pain and suffering (usually mental and emotional abuse), whereas the purpose of persuasion is to shift the way another person thinks about a particular topic or idea.
In this way, verbal self defense is something that should be used specifically when another person’s style of communication is causing you to have negative feelings. In a situation where you are simply trying to shift another person’s opinion(s) about the way you think things should be done (and you are not feeling mentally or emotionally hurt by their behavior) then the thing to use is tactics of persuasion.
